We are glad to present the latest of our publications that was recently published - Special Edition of the SEE Law Journal.

This Special Edition of the SEE Law Journal is somewhat unique in its own right as it is the first issue that focuses on one very specific topic, the cross-border enforcement in South East Europe and is the first one that has competitive component. It is a product of the joint effort and partnership of the SEELS Network, Deutsche Gesellschaft fürm Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, Open Regional Fund for South East Europe-Legal Reform and the International Union of Judicial Officers (UIHJ).

This publication comes as a result of the research of the academics and practitioners from the SEE region, that submitted their papers at the latest Call which we have published as one of the activities that were undertaken in the “Cross-border enforcement of judgments in South East Europe” project.

The researches came from different countries of the SEE region, and in cases worked in bigger teams providing for a more complex overview of the topic in a comparative study concerning their countries, while others worked in teams of two coming from same country or individually. As it was mentioned, the authors that contributed with their papers to this particular Call for Papers, entered in the competition which resulted with a selection of the best 3 papers. The ones which were awarded are:

1. The indirect jurisdiction of the 2019 Hague Convention on recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments in civil and commercial matters – Is the “heart” of the Convention in the right place?
2. Private Enforcement of Competition Law - Albanian challenges in the reflection of EU requirements.
3. Salary enforcement in the Western Balkans

15-16 December 2020 - The European standards on freedom of expression can be more effectively implemented by offering training in this field to different local actors such as judges, prosecutors, lawyers, police officers but also students who could then apply these standards in their current or future work. This contributes to the creation of a favourable environment to exercising freedom of expression and freedom of the media at domestic level. 

The Training of Trainers on HELP Methodology for the online courses: “Freedom of expression” and “Safety and protection of journalists” was organised on 15-16 December 2020 and promoted the courses that have been jointly developed by the Council of Europe Human Rights Education for Legal Professionals (HELP) Programme and joint European Union and Council of Europe action “Freedom of Expression and Freedom of the Media in South-East Europe (JUFREX)”. The courses are based on interactive learning methods, are free of charge and easily accessible to anyone interested. They are excellent tools to supplement traditional educational material used in legal education and beyond.

The Training of Trainers aimed to equip participants, future HELP tutors with the technical skills needed to lead HELP tutored courses at local level through the HELP online platform in line with the HELP Training Methodology.

The training attended by the representatives of Law and Political Science faculties and lawyers from the region was organised under the JUFREX, in partnership with HELP Secretariat and the South East European Law School Network (SEELS), a network dedicated to increase international competitiveness and the performance of legal education, research and publishing in South-East Europe.

JUFREX and HELP in the Western Balkans are part of the “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Turkey 2019-2022”, joint initiative of the European Union and the Council of Europe, which aims at assisting Beneficiaries in the Western Balkans region and Turkey to comply with the Council of Europe standards and European Union acquis in the framework of the enlargement process, where relevant.

The Faculty of Law Osijek at the Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek is organising the 5th lnternational Conference on EU and Comparative Law lssues and Challenges,taking place from 20 to 21 May 2021. This year's conference theme 'EU 2021 - The future of the EU in and after the pandemic' will explore future directions for law and economics in EU. The key objectives of the conference are to provide a forum for scholars in the areas of research and innovation policy analysis to exchange ideas, and to present findings across disciplinary boundaries.

We invite you to consider submitting an abstract for the Conference. The Organization Committee will decide which papers should be included in the Conference.

SEE Law Journal is publishing a Call for Papers for the Special Edition of the journal due December 2020, an edition that is published within the frames of the  “Cross-border enforcement of judgments in South East Europe” sub-project which is implemented under the leadership of the GIZ Open Regional Fund for South East Europe-Legal reform. The Call is opened for academics, legal professionals, researchers and PhD law students from South East Europe.
